JULY 2004: BETA promotes a can-crusher to help with solid-waste problem.

MAY 2004: BETA takes a stand on Cruise ship tourism and develops a position paper for distribution to government and the public.

BETA TO BECOME AN E-ORGANIZATION!

BETA has been struggling to remain a viable, nation-wide organization for several years now. Part of the difficulty is that with most members actively involved in the tourism industry, few can take time off needed to travel to monthly meetings half-a-day's drive away. As a result, the few active members tend to come from the same district--namely Cayo. To enable broader participation, the board has decided to try to use the Internet as the primary means of communication and discussion among its membership, rather than face-to-face meetings. Feel free to voice your concerns or interests on this site's forum, or email comments to the webmistress--Judy Y. at susa@btl.net.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
BETA cannot be an effective organization unless it represents and has the active participation of a large number of stakeholders of the ecotourism industry. One goal of the coming year is to dramatically increase membership. If you're not a member, please join. If you are a member, please try to enlist others.

CRUISE SHIPS
Several members had expressed concern about the large number of cruise ship visitations to Belize projected in the future and worry about their effects environment. A major scheduled project for 2003-2004 is to examine this issue in light of ecotourism concerns to try to arrive at some recommendations to ensure sustainability.

ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGN
An intensive, nation-wide anti-litter campaign with investigation and pilot studies of possible waste recycling. was to be our major focus for 2002. Unfortunately, it never got beyond the investigation stage. Several BETA members are still interested in this project, and hopefully we can begin to make some progress on it in 2003-2004.
